Q: Why “aveil?”
A: A veil exists. This veil traditionally symbolizes that which obstructs or distorts our vision. After years of contemplation, this veil symbolizes to me the partial, and at times deceptive nature of conscious mind. It can be visualized as a layer of symbols and abstractions that separate humans from the world as it is.
Q: Why make clothes?
A: Clothing is a principal form of self-expression that is not being explored like it should be. The idea is to create clothes that thematically inquire into the most fundamental of questions (i.e. Who am I? Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going?). These questions remain as mysterious to people today as they did to primitive man. This curiosity is timeless and universal.
Q: How do the clothes communicate these ideas?
A: The designs explore man’s on-going relationship with existence…by framing him within environments that visually blend his inner and outer worlds. These surreal landscapes are intended to communicate, in subtle ways, man’s endless search for meaning. Varying levels of detail are intended to symbolize the varying levels of depth, inherent in the act of perception.
Q: What else differentiates aveil from other independent clothing brands?
A: All of the clothes are made by hand. T-shirts are home-dyed, giving every shirt a unique color and texture. The shirts are printed using a sublimation system, which transfers digital printouts to fabric. Therefore, every print is unique, no two are the same.
Q: Where is aveil sold? How can I buy it?
A: Aveil is not sold in stores. It may be in the future, but as of now, it is word-of-mouth only. An online store will be available to take custom-orders at www.aveilexists.com.
